Facing the pressure of regionals, Hinsdale Central's
Thomas Fielder refused to stumble until a sectional spot
was safely in hand.
Tripped at the start of the WSC Silver race, Fielder
never found his stride and was disappointed to place
13th.
But a ninth-place time of 15:51 at last Saturday's
Hinsdale Central regional qualified the junior for
sectionals -- even if his sprint across the finish line
was followed by another hard landing.
"It was better to fall at the end of the race than the
beginning," Fielder deadpanned. "I was glad I was able
to put 110 percent into this one. I had a race I was
able to enjoy afterwards.
"When I see a pack of guys I can go with, I need to
recognize it. Last week I wasn't able to do that. This
week I was able to do it the whole way, and able to
catch some guys right at the end."
Fielder's late kick helped him pass two runners and
finish in the top 10, giving him added confidence as he
prepares for this Saturday's Lockport sectional.
"Lockport's a tough course, but I've always liked
uphills better than downhills," said Fielder, who ran in
sectionals there as a freshman. "Not many people say
that, but that's where I can get guys. And there's a lot
of hills at Lockport."
Hinsdale Central's team couldn't make its own climb to
sectionals, placing eighth with 179 points. Jeremy Klein
(30th, 16:34), Dave Callicutt (41st, 16:49), Pete
Richard (46th, 16:54) and Sam Mortimer (53rd, 17:12)
completed the team's top five. Nick Mortimer was 57th
and Tim Filarski 59th in a lineup of all seniors except
Fielder and Richard.
