Jim Westphal is in his third year as
head coach for the Red Devil Cross
Country program. In addition to his
coaching duties, Jim teaches in the
Educational Services Department at
Hinsdale Central High School. This will
be Jim’s eleventh year in education and
high school coaching. Prior to coming to
Hinsdale Central, Jim served as an
assistant coach in the sprints and field
events at Glenbard West High School from
2002-2005.
After graduating from Oak Park & River
Forest High School, where he was the
1987 3200 meter state champion, Jim
moved on to Loyola University and was a
four time All-American in Cross Country
and Track & Field. Jim also competed in
two Olympic Trials (1992 & 1996) as well
as competing in three World Cross
Country Championships as a U.S. World
Cross Country team member (1994-1996).
He and his wife, Julie, have three
children, Dylan (4), Jaclyn (2 ½), and
Alyssa (6 months).

Jim Kupres joins the Red Devil coaching
staff for his third full season as an
assistant coach. Jim also serves as the boys
head track coach for the Red Devil’s as
well. Jim gained experience in the sport by
serving as a graduate assistant coach at the
University of Illinois-Chicago from
1997-2002. Additionally, Jim served as a
four-year Cross Country and Track & Field
manager under Gordon Thomson at Loyola
University of Chicago from 1987-1991.
In addition to his coaching duties, Jim is a
school social worker at Hinsdale Central
High School. He and his wife, Sheri, have
two children Sam (3) and Sarah (1 ½). Jim
earned his undergraduate degree in Business
Management (Loyola University-1990) and
Master of Social Work (Jane Adams College of
Social Work-2002).

Noah Lawrence attended York High School and
competed for four years on the track and
cross country teams and was team captain of
the Cross Country team in 1997. Noah earned
his bachelor’s degree at Grinnell College
and ran four years in the track and cross
country programs, earning several conference
championships. Once Noah graduated he taught
social studies and coached track and field
at Lamoni High School in Lamoni, Iowa from
2003-2004.
Coach Lawrence, in his third year as a
volunteer assistant, earned his M.A. in
Social Studies Education from the University
of Iowa, while serving as a volunteer
assistant track and cross country coach for
the Hawkeye’s. Coach Lawrence began teaching
at Hinsdale Central in fall of 2005, as a
social studies teacher, volunteer cross
country coach, and assistant track coach.
Noah was also the individual champion of the
Mad City Marathon (Madison, Wisconsin 2002)
and is currently training for Chicago
Marathon.
