Hinsdale Central Coach: Mark McCabe.

Last season: First in West Suburban Silver, third at regionals, fourth at sectionals, fourth at state.

Top runners: Lauren Zumbach, so; Roey Hines, so; Emily Cleary, jr; Gina Kapusta, sr; Heather Stevens, so; Jenny Laser, sr.

Home course: Katherine Legge Memorial Park.

Outlook: The Red Devils had a season for the ages last year. Hinsdale Central went undefeated in conference, won the WSS championship, had the school’s highest finish at state — and did it behind two freshmen. Zumbach and Hines both earned all-state last year and will be one of the most dominant pair of underclass runners on any team. “Lauren and Roey have taken the next step in their training this summer and are fit and excited for the season to begin,” McCabe said. The unknown quantity that could determine if the Red Devils compete for a trophy in November is Cleary. The talented junior was all-state as a freshman but struggled with injuries all of last season. If she is healthy, that trio could be top-20 runners at state and put the Red Devils in a position to dethrone Naperville North.
