Eight may not be enough for Benet senior Abby Higgins.

Saturday she defeated some of the area's top runners to win the Class AA regional hosted by Hinsdale Central. The victory at Katherine Legge Memorial Park was her eighth in a major race this season.

Most important to Higgins, who won with a time of 18 minutes 27 seconds over the three-mile course, was that her teammates will advance as well to next weekend's sectionals.

"I just wanted our team to qualify," said Higgins, who finished fifth in the state as a sophomore but was injured and on the sidelines at the end of last season. "That's the main goal, for our team to get Downstate."

Benet finished second in the team standings behind an impressive showing by regional champion Hinsdale Central, whose runners finished 2-3-4-13-14.

The Red Devils were led by runner-up Roey Hines, who was 4.2 seconds behind Higgins, fellow sophomore Lauren Zumbach and senior Gina Kapusta.

Neuqua Valley junior Chris Derrick must like Katherine Legge's course, he won there early this season and took the boys regional title with a time of 15:10.7-almost 15 seconds better than runner-up and teammate Jim Riddle.

"I don't want to sound cocky, but I definitely had those expectations," said Derrick, who has improved his personal best by 36 seconds this season.

Led by third-place Kyle Gibson, Naperville North took the boys regional title.
