At the Varsity level, our primary focus each year is on the State Meet. Our second most important goal is the Conference Championships. At the F/S and JV levels, the Conference Meet is our primary goal and the last meet of the season for most of those athletes. The West Suburban Silver is one of the Top 3 conferences for Girls Cross Country in the state every year and this year is no exception. In our Conference, the Conference Championship is determined by a combination of the dual meet results and the Conference Meet. Last year we were outright Conference Champions on all 3 levels, the first time that had ever been done in our Conference. Our goal this year was to continue to be the best we could be at all 3 levels. The meet this year was at LT, with the first race beginning at noon due to SAT testing. Temperatures were ideal, in the low to mid 50’s, with sunny and windy conditions. Winds were very steady and quite gusty all day from the west/northwest. The 2.98 mile course was flat, fast and in good condition.

The Varsity race was another close one this year. We defeated York on the 6th runner tie-breaker for the 2nd consecutive year, with the final score at 44-44. Since we defeated York earlier in the dual meet, we won the outright Conference Championship. We have now won the Conference title 5 years in a row. All of the girls ran well, with Lauren Zumbach leading the way in 4th place in 17:39. (adding 10 seconds for a 3 mile equivalent, this would equal a 17:49 for 3 miles). Elaine Kuckertz and Roey Hines followed closely in 17:45 and 17:54 in 6th and 8th places. Gina Kapusta and Emily Cleary finished 12th and 14th in 18:03 and 18:09, with Gina passing another runner heading into the chute to pick up a valuable point. Heather Stevens had her best race yet, finishing 16th in 18:34, ahead not only of York’s 6th runner but their 5th as well. The Top 16 finishers in each race are named All-Conference, so our Top 5 runners all achieved that recognition. Gina took home the Championship plaque as the Athlete of the Meet. As we talked about after the race, “good teams find a way to win”.

At the F/S level, we finished 3rd in the meet but, because we were undefeated in our Conference duals, ended up tying with Downers North as the Conference Champions.
This was our 2nd title in a row. Katie Kummerer led the way for the Lady Devils, placing 4th overall in 19:22. Also earning All-Conference honors were Catherine Bruns in 12th place and Hailey Krzyston in 14th, both running outstanding final races when it counted the most. Colleen Leahy and Victoria Glatz both finished strongly as well as our 4th and 5th scorers in 20th and 21st places. Holly Larsen and Monique Bronowicki also finished in the Top 30 to round out our Top 7.

The JV race lived up to our expectation as a battle between 4 teams for the Conference Championship. When the dust cleared, York came out on top, followed by LT, HC and DGN. Emily Kane was our top finisher in 3rd place in a time of 19:15. Also earning All-Conference honors were Jenny Laser in 8th place and Allie Emery in 14th. Margaret Cavenagh and Grace Pedersen in 18th and 20th rounded out our Top 5. Maddie Metcalf finished 25th and she was followed by Lisa Kapusta as our 7th runner.

One of the cornerstones of our program is that every athlete counts and everyone matters. As long as each of us is giving our best effort and attitude, that is what matters. When 61 girls are contributing in that way, good things happen. Positive attitudes and enthusiastic energy are contagious. This year’s Conference Meet was another good first step as we head into the State Series over the course of the next 3 weeks.

This week we host the Regional Meet again at KLM. The Girls race goes off at 10:15 and the Boys at 11:00. As usual, our Regional is the toughest in the State, which gives us an extra edge in our preparations for the Sectional and State Meets. The other top Girls teams figure to be Naperville North and Benet, with Downers South, Neuqua Valley and Naperville Central also battling for the last two Sectional berths. All of the fan support we have had all season has been tremendous. Come out and support the Lady Devils at Regionals on Saturday!
