The Regional meet is the first meet each year in the
State Series which leads ultimately to the State Meet.
There are 24 Regionals throughout the state and the top
five teams, as well as the top five individuals not a
part of those five teams, move on to the Sectional Meet
the following weekend. Four Regionals feed into each of
the six Sectional sites. At each Sectional Meet, the top
five teams, as well as the top seven individuals not on
those five teams, advance to the State Championships in
Peoria on November 4.
We hosted the Regional meet again this year at KLM. The
weather on race day turned out nice, with temps in the
low 50’s and cloudy and calm conditions. Course
conditions, on the other hand, were another story. After
consistent rains for the past couple of weeks, the
course was a mess. After a great deal of work, including
laying straw on a particularly wet stretch, the course
on race day was in as good of shape as it could have
been. Yet conditions were extremely wet, muddy, slippery
and soft. As would be expected, the course ran extremely
slow. At the same time, performances were outstanding in
both the boys and girls races in what once again was the
most competitive Regional in the state.
We took home the Regional Championship by scoring 36
points, ahead of Benet (63, ranked #7 in the latest
Coaches Poll), Naperville North (83, ranked #2/3),
Neuqua Valley (84) and Downers South (105). Roey Hines,
Lauren Zumbach and Gina Kapusta led the way, placing 2,
3, and 4 for the Lady Devils in times of 18:31, 18:41
and 18:43. Emily Cleary and Heather Stevens placed 13th
and 14th in 19:10 and 19:11. Elaine Kickers, who had
been sick all week but competed anyway, struggled in
33rd place but will be back at 100% for the Sectional.
Emily Kane rounded out the Top 7 for the Devils in 38th
place. All of the girls ran strong and competitive
races. One trademark of our team is that we are all in
this together. When we need someone to step up, it
happens. “A team without envy is a team without limits”.
The girls are excited about the next two weeks and
anxious to be the very best they can be.
Next up this Saturday is the Sectional meet. It was
great last week to see so many alums at the meet,
including Ashley Coltish, Megan Gleason, Kristina
Truedson, Danyelle Somerfield, Anna Scale, Melissa
Maestri and Dana Filarski. It’s just another example of
“At the moment of commitment, the whole world conspires
to ensure your success”. Thanks for all of your support.
The Sectional race is at Dell wood Park in Lockport, the
site of our Regional meets two years ago. The Girls race
is first at 10:45. Directions are elsewhere on this
site. Be there in body or spirit. Go, Lady Devils!
