The Regional Meet is the first step in
the State Meet Series. There are 16 Regional Meets in
the new Class 3A division and the top five teams, as
well as the top five individuals not a part of those
teams, advance to the Sectional Meet the following
weekend. Four Regionals feed into each of the four
Sectional sites. Next week at Sectionals, the top five
teams will advance to the State Meet, as well as the top
seven individuals not a part of those five teams. There
will then be 20 teams and 28 individuals running in the
Class 3A State Meet in Peoria on November 3.
We had hosted the Regional at KLM for three of the past
four years, but this year we headed to Proviso West High
School for Regional action. It was a warm day for the
1:30pm race, with race time temperatures right at 70
degrees. There was a bright sun and strong winds from
the south/southwest. The 3.10 mile course is flat,
although bumpy and uneven and not particularly fast.
Course conditions were dry.
We ran well as a team and took home the Regional
Championship for the second year in a row. We scored 28
points to finish ahead of LT (51), York (61), Hinsdale
South and Willowbrook. Our Regional was one of the two
most competitive on the girl’s side in the state. Elaine
Kuckertz was the Regional Champion, finishing 1st in a
time of 18:37. Elaine ran a good portion of the race at
the front of the pack along with teammates Lauren
Zumbach and Roey Hines. Lauren and Roey finished 3rd and
5th overall in times of 18:55 and 19:22, giving us three
of the top five finishers in the Regional for the second
year in a row. Heather Stevens had another outstanding
race, finishing 9th in 19:28. Grace Hucek made a big
step forward as our 5th scorer, finishing 11th overall
in 19:40 after passing three LT runners and a number of
others in the last 400 meters. Katie Kummerer and Hailey
Krzyston finished things off for the Lady Devils,
finishing 17th and 19th in times of 19:57 and 20:08.
This was Hailey’s first “traditional” Varsity race. She
did a fine job and gained valuable experience for the
future. We held Emily Cleary out as she had been feeling
a little under the weather earlier in the week. She’s
back at 100% now and ready to go this weekend. Time and
time again, the girls have stepped up when the team
needs it and this meet was another example of that. All
For One!
Next up this Saturday is the Sectional Meet at Busse
Woods, hosted by Schaumburg High School. The Girls Race
goes off at 10:30am, followed by the Boys Race at 11:30.
It was great to have so many fans and alums at the
Regional and we encourage all of you to come out this
Saturday to support the girls. If you can’t be there in
person, be there in spirit. “At the moment of
commitment, the whole world conspires to ensure your
success”. Directions to the meet are elsewhere on this
site. Good luck, Lady Devils!
