The WSC Cross Country Championship
meet took place on Saturday at Proviso West High School.
The Proviso coaches and staff, along with meet official
Gary Goss, did a great job in organizing and
administering the meet. It was a great day for racing,
with temperatures ranging for the mid 50’s to 60 degrees
throughout the day and partly sunny and generally calm
conditions. The later start time proved beneficial in
terms of providing optimal weather conditions. Proviso’s
3.09 mile course is flat and generally fast, although
the course was soft and damp from earlier rains. Despite
this, times in the girls’ races were very fast when
converted to a 3 mile equivalent. There is no stronger
girls cross country conference than the West Suburban
Silver. It was, as usual, a very fast and extremely
competitive meet!
The Lady Devils defended their Varsity championship,
scoring 39 points to prevail over York (48) and LT (54).
Elaine Kuckertz led the way for the Devils, finishing
3rd overall despite battling a cold most of the week.
Katie Kummerer and Graylin Harrison worked together
throughout the race and ran outstanding races, finishing
6th and 7th in lifetime best 3 mile equivalents of 18:05
and 18:07. Heather Stevens was next for the Lady Devils
in 10th place, and Niamh McCarthy rounded out the Top 5
scoring in 13th place. All five girls were awarded
All-Conference status. Katie was our Athlete of the
Meet. Roey Hines had a great first race back, running a
3 mile equivalent of 18:33 to place 18th, and Lauren
Zumbach was right behind Roey in 19th place. The Varsity
win was the 7th Conference Championship in a row. Roey
and Lauren have been a part of the last four of those
titles, and Elaine and Heather the last three.
The Junior Varsity ran a very impressive race to win the
Conference Championship with 26 points, ahead of York
(49) and LT (57). It was the JV’s 4th win in the last
five years. Hailey Krzyston won the race, running a
lifetime best 3 mile equivalent of 18:34. Grace Hucek
was close behind in 2nd place, and Colleen Leahy and
Kelsey Chetosky worked together well to finish in 6th
and 7th, with Kelsey running the best cross country race
of her life. Victoria Glatz was next in 12th place, with
an all-time best 3 mile time of 19:45 in her final high
school race. Our Top 5 were all All-Conference athletes.
Lauren Emery and Catherine Bruns rounded out the Top 7
scoring for the Devils in the important sixth and
seventh team spots. Hailey and Kelsey were our Athletes
of the Meet.
While our Frosh/Soph girls have won the Conference title
five of the last seven years, this year it was not to be
as we finished 3rd with 83 points behind good team
efforts from LT (34) and York (54). Freshman Grace Klein
led the way for the Devils in 3rd place and was followed
closely in 5th by Rita Kuckertz. Allison Sulouff was our
3rd runner on Saturday, finishing 21st, and was followed
by Nicole Lang and Maddie Pound in 26th and 32nd places.
Rounding out the Top 7 were Ariel Leung and Tess Oetter
in 39th and 40th in the 156 runner field. In addition to
our top finishers, we had many, many other season and
lifetime bests in the race. It is fun and rewarding
every year to see the hard work that all of the girls
have put in pay off with their best efforts at the
Conference Championships.
This week we begin the State Series with the Regional
Meet, which we host at KLM on Saturday. The Girls Race
goes off at 10:00am and the Boys Race at 11:00. As
usual, the girls’ field at Regional and Sectional is the
most competitive of any in the state, which we love
because it prepares us in the best way possible for the
state Meet in two weeks. Come out and cheer on the Lady
Devils this Saturday at KLM!
